Deburring process / deburring

For almost three decades we have been continuously developing our know how in automated deburring. Whether flexible single robot systems, closed deburring cells or complete production and transfer lines including parts handling: Installations from SHL are globally recognized as reference systems.

In using robot-based systems for deburring and brushing components, users are confronted with a tough decision: Should a tool-guided or a workpiece-guided system be used? Even though both processes offer the same surface finish quality, there are several important and decisive differences to be considered.

Workpiece-guided deburring


In workpiece-guided deburring, the robot takes the component and brings it to the various processing stations.

Workpiece-guided deburring requires more work space. The fixed tool position in this deburring procedure enables a much faster and more flexible way of working as the cycle time is significantly better than in tool-guided deburring.

Tool-guided deburring


In tool-guided deburring, the component is clamped in a stationary fixture and is machined with tools carried by the robot.

This variant of deburring requires less work space. However, the tools are changed during the process time. That leads to an extended cycle time for this process.

Both deburring variants have the same process sequence and both variants enable a very efficient way of working. The deburring quality of the finished parts is equally good in both processes. The gripper can be automatically cleaned after every cycle in workpiece-guided as well as in tool-guided deburring.

Automatic adjusting units (brushing, deburring tool, milling cutter)


SHL robot installations are fitted with deburring, brushing and milling tools that are automatically adjusted. Therefore, a program change to compensate for tool wear is not required. Workpiece tolerances are automatically compensated in some areas during deburring.

Process monitoring (breakage/wear of milling cutter)


If milling cutters are used for deburring, SHL robot installations can optionally be equipped with a process monitoring system. The system reacts if the milling tool breaks or is blunt. This system can minimize unnecessary standstill or downtime.

Noise and dust protection cabins (closed robot cells)


Apart from open robot installations, SHL also offers self-supporting closed robot cells with dust and/or noise protection cabins. A special advantage of these self-supporting robot cells: The installation can be shifted without deinstallation of the robot or the individual machines. Closed SHL robot cells offer compact and flexible solutions as well as decreased installation and commissioning times.

Applications for deburring cells


SHL deburring cells are used for various structural components such as cast or die cast parts. E.g. casting flash at the mold separation is removed during this process. Cast and structural parts of aluminum used in automotive and aerospace applications are becoming increasingly important.

While brass parts are required for fittings, cast steel is, among others, required for crankshafts. Downtime of the installation can be reduced with the workpiece and belt monitoring system that is available as an option. This monitoring system enables SHL machines to work even more productively and efficiently.
